Will SpinRite run where you need it to?
Windows is able to boot on a PC using either BIOS or UEFI firmware. But DOS can only be booted on PCs having either BIOS firmware or UEFI with BIOS compatibility support. This is sometimes known as “CSM” for “Compatibility Support Module”. Since SpinRite v6.1 is a DOS application this means it needs a PC with either a BIOS or UEFI with BIOS support.
Since the BIOS was the original standard, for many years UEFI systems have offered BIOS support, but the most recent systems may no longer provide support for the BIOS.
GRC's Bootable freeware
SpinRite v6.1 will run anywhere any earlier version of SpinRite ran. But the latest machines may not be able to run any version of SpinRite if they do not support the BIOS and boot DOS. Since this would prevent the use of SpinRite on such a machine, you may use our Bootable freeware to create a bootable USB thumb drive, ISO or IMG image to test any system's “bootability” for DOS and its ability to run SpinRite.
The Bootable page provides complete and detailed instructions for booting DOS and running SpinRite on UEFI machines and helps with navigating Windows “Secure Boot” and Bitlocker encrypted drives.
